Shelley and Strong
I rarely see any CZW, but I got a chance to pick up a match between Alex Shelley and Roderick Strong from November 2004 (NoI). Oddly enough it goes second on the card, but there was a hell of a lot of good in here. These guys aren't on the level of American Dragon and Samoa Joe, but watching them gives you a lot of confidence for the future of US indies once the current class moves on to better things. Shelley was fucking fabulous in the first portion of the match, all of the matwork worked in the context it was used, and they did alost everything right, barring Strong going down on a shoulder tackle, which kind of goes against the theme of technical vs. power they seemed to be going for. I didn't love Strong's control segment, even though I expected to. I don't know, when you wait nearly 10 minutes to start a heel control for a match, it really needs to be longer than what this was. It could be just structure bias on my part, but I would have loved a longer heel offense portion with Rod cutting off comebacks with teased backbreakers. The forearm exchange was awesome, and the end was solid if not spectacular. Given the opening portion and Shelley's offense, I think they were pacing themselves for 5 minutes longer than they went. Still, it was so ironic seeing these 2 young guys work a themed match similar to Nakamura vs. Tanahashi at the Dome, but doing it so much better. You have Shelley who is ten times the technical wizard Nakamura is. Then you have Strong who usually can work the back a hell of a lot better than Tanahashi did, but was only alright in this one. And then you have the finishing runs, and this was better in that department too in sticking to theme. If Nakamura and Tanahashi had worked this exact match, it would be getting MOTY talk from so many people. I look forward to these 2 working in RoH soon. ***1/4

Your reviews are very good but they would be better if you didn't trash puro all over the internet to elevate your beloved indies. This is why you get called ROHBOT and company shill because your ROH love pushes you to hate the 'workrate' opposition. You go outta your way to trash puro matches and make them seem inferior like they threaten what you like and its kinda irritating to read all the time from an other-wise intelligent reviewer.

It's hard not to trash it after going through the hell of watching it.

You just proved me right. Tanahashi v Nakamura wasntt MOTY or anything (Id give it *** 1/2) but wasnt 'hell' to watch. Hell if it happened in ROH you would invented a story about why it was so great like you do for some of the average under-card matches. It was better than Shelley v Strong (which I watched LIVE) at least. Im someone who goes to nearly every ROH show and enjooy it but you just go over the top making it sound like the best thing since sliced bread + shitting all over its closest rival (puro) to make your point. Some buds of mine were calling you the 'US Indy Adolf Hitler' yesterday and I laughed at them and said ROHberg was a better name... but now I see they were not far off. You would pee your pants if 1 of the guys your bashing (Nakamura or Tanahashhi) came over to ROH.

Well, one usually associates with those on his or her own intellectual level, so I'm not exactly sure I give a damn what your friends think of me.

Taking a look at Nakamura-Tanahashi, the structure is incredibly poor. The opening sequence was just fucking stupid, and defies all logic just for the sake of getting a pop in the dome, which it barely did. Now, one thing wrestlers need to do in matches is establish roles. Nakamura is the flashy submission guy, now compare him to Alex Shelley who has a somewhat similar role. Nakamura has a limited array of moves, and outside of one cute counter to the dragon sleeper the whole match, he brings nothing anywhere near Shelley's matwork in the opening portion. In the first 10, Shelley/Strong totally kills Nakamura/Tanahashi when it comes to establishing what each guy is going for and creating a cool but meaningful transition. The only thing the dome match has over it is Tanahashi's awesome tope which was a lot better than Shelley's twisting crossbody press.

In the next portion, neither match is great but at least Shelley/Strong has purpose. Strong is working the back for a reason, all of his offense is focused there and he finishes a lot with a backbreaker variation. It makes sense. Why is Tanahashi working the back? He has no finisher that impacts there and Nakamura is anything but a power guy. The only answer is "to fill time," and even by that justification they don't do it very well, blowing their only unique idea (Juji-->High angle crab) early instead of using it as a good nearfall later to pay off the work on the back. Instead they totally disregard the back, confirming the work was only done to elongate the match.

Finally, the comeback portion and final run. Here the two are closer to equal. Both have really fun strike exchanges, but at least Shelley worked his comeback like it was abig comeback going into the final stretch, unlike nakamura who killed the crowd dead with his terrible spear and shitty el nino. He paced it like it was another control segment rather than a comeback and it killed any chance of a super hot final run. Both matches devolve into "your move, my move" stuff in the end, and neither pays off much, but at least you've got Shelley going for moves he couldn't get earlier.

Hey, nice reviews man. I am wondering if you have seen Roderick vs. Shelley from the JPC2. I don't recall much from the match, but I remember enjoying it vastly, and thinking it was the best match of the weekend. If you enjoyed the CZW match, you probably will enjoy the JPC2 match, if you haven't already seen it.
